14′ Seamless Green Screen

Friday, October 10th, 2008

We’re leaving the 14′ Green Screen up for the Month of October for a few shoots. If you’re hesitant to shoot because of cost or lack of experience, then you need to call me. The shoot is surprisingly inexpensive and the shooting process couldn’t be any easier. Dan and I can setup a teleprompter so that you can read your script. No memorization required. We also pride ourselves on making you comfortable. If you need a beer to get you going, we’ll all head over to the Walnut room and grab one before the shoot. If you just need some down time, then there’s a lounge and music and the studio. Call me if you have any questions.14′ seamless green screen

Borderless Video from Unleaded

Borderless Video Still

The end product of the October 1st green screen shoot is now live. This is a good example of integrated seamless web video. The client was looking for more website/user interaction and this is what came to life. Another term for this technique is ‘Borderless Video’ or ‘Borderless Web Video’ rightfully named due to the lack of a video screen or borders that a typical video is embedded within. This can be an effective tool for getting information to the client in a cost effective way. I have also done these shoots for PowerPoint presentations. Some people don’t speak as well in public as they do in front of a camera, so this is a great technique to give a presentation without getting nervous in front of potential investors/clients. Click Play and your preseantion is given for you.

Here’s a link to the final product: Borderless Video

October 1st Green Screen Shoot

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Dan and I got back into the studio the other day and shot some seamless Green Screen. The client is a Identity Theft expert and speaks worldwide on behalf of getting your Identity stolen. He was great to work with. Dan and I used a wireless lavaliere mic and the HVX200. The true beauty of this shoot was seeming 2 sheets of screen so that the subject could walk into and out of the shot. We also did some more experimenting with the lights. Take a look. Not a shodow on the back. This was by far the best green screen footage I’ve ever shot. I was able to chroma key out the back in less than 3 minutes of work in Final Cut Pro. Please contact me if you have any interest in doing one of these shoots.

Green Screen Graphics

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

The most important thing in Green Screen/Chroma Keying is lighting the subject and backdrop.  A professor told me in grad school that the best lighting for green screen was outside on a cloudy day. Next time it’s an overcast day, take a look at the ground and notice that there’s no shadow. This is because the clouds bounce the light all around in every direction and therefore cancel any concentrated focal points  which create shadows. That’s the objective in lighting a green screen set. Even lighting from from all directions to cancel out shadows.

phase 1

Once your subject is well lit, it’s time to shoot. I shoot in HD for all green screen shoots because it gives me a larger range of colors and more pixels/data to work with. Standard NTSC will work, but if you have the ability to shoot at 1080, I would recommend it. Another tip, if your tripod has that gear, is to flip your camera on it’s side to utilize the 16:9 ratio. Fill the subject on the 16 side, instead of the 9. More data means more to work with and thus more options in post.

If you’re subject is well lit, mic’d, then shoot away. Given the well lit footage, post is simple to key out the green in FCP. Kenstone has some good articles (oldies but goodies) if you’re unfamiliar with the process.

phase 2

Now that the green is pulled from the footage, you can simply lay a backdrop behind the subject layer.

phase 3

I tend to spend a lot of time in photoshop during post-production creating png layers to import into final cut. Final Cut provides limitless options when paired with Photoshop. This marriage is what makes this technology so much fun.

phase 4

Video Compression for youtube

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

I don’t know the actual stats on how many videos are uploaded to youtube each day, but I would imagine it’s in the hundreds of thousands. Unfortunately, most of them suck. I’m not talking about content, but compression. Our internet is getting littered with really poor quality videos. I did a little googling and found a few articles by the master Brian Gary on the Kenstone.net site. He’s put plenty of time and troubleshooting into finding a pretty amazing equation for compressing videos before they are run through the youtube upload-compressor and still maintain high quality. For anyone uploading video (pro or not) these articles are a no-brainer.

Denver Green Screen

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

My buddy Dan Knudson and I perfected our Green Screen technique today in his studio. We’re using the HVX200 and some really pro lighting. Dan and I are really excited about this technology. Granted it’s been around for 50 years, but nowadays, with videos for the web, Green screen production is in high demand. The partnership (along with Dan’s dog) proves to be a pretty great team. I don’t know if there’s anyone in Denver that has this as dialed in as we do.

Dr. Nicolette Picerno

Friday, June 6th, 2008

These are some videos that might be a little hard on the eyes with no pun intended. Dr. Nicolette Picerno is a double board certified plastic surgeon in Denver Colorado. She asked me to shoot 13 procedures. I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting into when she told me it was going to involve quite a few needles, but I’m always up for shooting new things. I was impressed with how good she was with her clients and how comfortable she made them all feel. I know I would be a little uneasy with needles so close to my eyes. I shot these using DVCPRO50 and I think the colors turned out great.
